Hello! How’s it going? This week I thought I’d share this warming and tasty drink with you guys. Since it’s almost mid December it’s also the season for colds and flues. This drink is great option for the aim to prevent or combat these two. This drink has two main ingredients that are ginger and lemon. Both great for boosting immunity and warming you up. Lemons contain a lot of vitamin C that has been proven to fasten the recovery from a flu. Lemons are used in the treatment of laryngitis, cough, shingles and halitosis to mention few examples. There are also many other things that  lemons can be used for. For example the peel of lemon contains an antioxidant called d-limonene that has been proven to protect from basal cell carcinoma.

Ginger on the other hand has even broader indications to different kinds of discomforts. There are things like sore throat, travel sickness, memory disorders, osteoarthritis and many others on the list. Ginger contains more than 20 antioxidants and over 20 different anti-inflammatory compounds. Ginger has cineols that are known to release mucus in for example laryngitis. Ginger also contains four different natural COX-2-inhibitors. COX-2-inhibitors are compounds found in NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) medication but also in nature that relieve inflammation. So here we have natures own NSAID in the form of ginger. It has been found out in scientific research to actually relieve pain and swelling on people who suffer from osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

The ingredients to this beverage are simple and you only need like 5 minutes to prepare it + the infucing time. You might need some time to get used with the strong taste of ginger. I recommend adding some honey to the drink to cut out some of the edge from ginger and also for additional health benefits as honey is very healthy as well. You might want to use organic ingredients at least for the lemons as it is difficult to wash out all the pesticides from citrus fruits. If you can’t use organic lemons make sure to wash them thoroughly first in warm water and then in cold water. The ginger you can just rinse quickly.

How to prepare: Cut two or three slices lemon and place them in a large cup. Slice about 4-5 slices of ginger and throw in with the lemon slices. Bring some water almost to boil and pour on top of the lemon and ginger. Let the drink to infuse for 10 to 15 minutes. I recommend putting a small plate on top of the cup so the drink doesn’t cool too much while you let it infuse. After you’ve infused the drink enough add some honey to your own preference. Enjoy!
